Should you find yourself short on time for an extended safari, this short 2-day safari may be just the right option for you. You get to experience the full safari magic on the fly in this extraordinary park with a huge concentration of elephants and the other group of big five wildlife; Lions Leopards, Buffalos and Cheetahs. Birdwatchers will not be disappointed either.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

We will pick you up from your location or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport early in the morning for the drive to Amboseli National Park, about 200 km south of Nairobi. During the drive, enjoy the changing landscapes from the lush green of Nairobi to the arid plains of Athi River and eventually the plains of Amboseli. Look out for the majestic glimpse of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance, signaling you’re nearing the park. Arrive in time for lunch, then rest in your tent or room before your first game drive.

In the late afternoon, set out to explore the park’s abundant elephant families marching before the scenic backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro. With an experienced guide, track lions, leopards, and cheetahs among the many wildlife species that call the park home. Return to camp by late evening for refreshments and dinner. Overnight at a safari lodge or tented camp.

Day 2

You get to start your game drive early today. A pre-dawn drive is the best time to see many predators at their most active. Return to camp for breakfast and check out, then enjoy another game drive as you exit the park. On a clear day, you might even see the snow-capped peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. For a different kind of Amboseli experience, you can participate in an optional cultural visit to a local Maasai village — your guide can easily arrange this. A 3-hour drive back to Nairobi will end with your drop-off at your hotel or the international airport.

 FAQs

1. How far is Amboseli National Park from Nairobi?
Amboseli is about 240 km from Nairobi, roughly a 4–5 hour drive depending on the route, or about 30 minutes by air from Wilson Airport.

2. Can I do a day trip to Amboseli from Nairobi?
Yes, though it makes for a long day — most day trips depart around 4:30–5:00 am and return in the evening. For a more relaxed experience with time for multiple game drives, an overnight or multi-day stay is recommended.

3. How many days should I spend in Amboseli?
A 3-day safari is generally considered ideal for a comprehensive Amboseli experience, allowing time for several game drives, a visit to Observation Hill, and a Maasai cultural village visit without feeling rushed.

4. What animals will I see in Amboseli National Park?
Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds, along with lions, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and over 400 bird species, all set against views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

5. When is the best time to visit Amboseli?
The dry season from June to October offers the best wildlife viewing and clearest Kilimanjaro views, as animals gather around limited water sources.

6. Is Amboseli better than the Masai Mara for a safari?
They offer different experiences rather than one being “better” — Masai Mara is known for the Great Wildebeest Migration, while Amboseli is renowned for its elephant herds and unmatched Mount Kilimanjaro views. Many travelers combine both in one trip.

7. Are walking safaris allowed in Amboseli National Park?
Walking safaris are not permitted inside Amboseli National Park itself, but they are available in surrounding conservancies and community areas bordering the park.

8. Can I combine an Amboseli safari with other parks or the coast?
Yes — Amboseli pairs well with the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, or a beach stay in Diani or Nyali, Mombasa, as part of a longer Elwama Tours itinerary.
