Saruni Rhino Tour – Samburu, the newest addition to the Saruni collection, graces the vast expanse of the 839,000 acres-large Sera Conservancy. Situated in the wild, undiscovered northern frontier of Kenya, it’s a little over a 1.5-hour drive from our Saruni Samburu lodge in nearby Kalama Conservancy.

This unique lodge offers diverse experiences, including the first black rhino tracking adventure in East Africa. Embark on an incredible walking safari, a thrilling odyssey allowing guests to actively contribute to the protection of this iconic species. The landscape is home to herds of elephants, creating a mesmerizing backdrop for birdwatching and cultural encounters, including the mesmerizing ‘singing wells’.

Day 1 – Nairobi to Saruni Rhino: Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, transfer to Wilson Airport. Board a light aircraft to Samburu, then embark on a thrilling afternoon game drive in the Rhino Sanctuary. Encounter black Rhinos, including Loijipu, the orphaned Rhino. Conclude with a sunset sundowner and a lantern-lit bush dinner in a dry river bed.

Day 2 – Saruni Rhino: Explore Lontopi Hill or visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Witness the compassion in the community-run sanctuary, caring for orphaned elephants. Combine a hike with a game drive, spotting the Samburu Five. Return to camp, relax in the natural rock infinity pool, and indulge in lunch at Swara House. Enjoy a memorable Bush “lugga” dinner under the African skies.

Day 3 – Departure from Saruni Rhino to Nairobi: Visit the Rhino sanctuary on the way to the airstrip. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Details

Day 1

  • Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a short drive will take you to Wilson Airport, where you will board a light aircraft flight to Samburu (NB: Luggage allowance 15kg PP preferably in a soft bag)
  • At Samburu airstrip, a guide and a 4WD safari vehicle will be waiting for you.
  • Arrive at the camp in time for lunch. In the afternoon, join your guide for a thrilling game drive inside the Rhino Sanctuary, where you will have the opportunity to see several black Rhinos and spot Loijipu the orphaned Rhino who was abandoned by his mother at birth.
  • The rangers of Sera and Reteti have been his family for the past 4 years. Alongside these endangered species, you will encounter a variety of other wildlife and birds.
  • Experience the magic of Africa with a sunset sundowner at a scenic spot, sipping your well-deserved drink. Conclude the day with a lantern-lit bush dinner in the idyllic setting of a dry river bed, surrounded by the symphony of the night sounds.

Day 2

  • Set out on an early morning adventure with a picnic breakfast, as you explore the remote area hike to Lontopi Hill inside the Rhino sanctuary or head to the Reteti Elephant sanctuary in the nearby Namunyak Conservancy (Reteti Sanctuary at additional cost and advance booking required). This is a community owned and run wildlife sanctuary where you will witness the true power of compassion as orphaned and injured elephants find refuge and care.
  • Marvel at breathtaking views, discover hidden caves, and immerse yourself in the wilderness. Combine this hike with a game drive to catch a glimpse of the wildlife you might have missed on the previous day’s safari. You might spot the Samburu Five, including the Somali Ostrict, Grevy’s Zebras, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, and Reticulated Giraffe. Return to the Camp and unwind with a refreshing dip in the natural rock infinity pool, overlooking the dry river bed, while playful monkeys entertain nearby. Indulge in a delicious lunch at Swara House, offering breath-taking views of a frequented waterhole. 
  • As the day draws to a close, relish a memorable Bush “lugga” dinner under the star-lit African skies before heading to bed for your last night in the remote wilderness of Kenya’s northern frontier.

Day 3

Visit the Rhino sanctuary on the way to the airstrip. Transfer to the Jomo Kenyatta international airport
